Police forces could cut costs without affecting the front line, Home Secretary Theresa May said today.

She insisted that "back office" savings could be made and said the national police inspection body agreed with her.

Mrs May was speaking as she met police, shopkeepers and residents during a visit to a housing estate in Chelmsford, Essex.

She said she had discussed policing initiatives during the visit and local officers had not voiced any concerns about job cuts.
