Egg-throwing protesters forced Nick Griffin, the BNP leader, to abandon a press conference outside the Houses of Parliament yesterday.

Mr Griffin and his colleague Andrew Brons, who were elected to the European Parliament last week, were confronted while speaking to journalists. The demonstrators, shouting "off our streets Nazi scum", pursued the pair, who were protected by bodyguards, across College Green opposite the Lords to a waiting car. The protesters kicked and hit his car with their placards.

Mr Griffin denounced the protesters as an "organised mob that's backed by all three main parties to stop us getting our message across to the public". Scotland Yard said two people were taken to hospital after the protest.

A spokeswoman said officers had received an allegation of common assault and were investigating reports of a road collision.
