The new thrusting TUC began with a typical showing of youth. The first two speakers following the opening address by Rodney Bickerstaffe were Ken Gill, retired leader of the manufacturing union MSF, and Ron Todd, former general secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union, who retired in March. Incidentally, Mr Bickerstaffe, a Buddy Holly lookalike, wanted it known that his big day coincided with what would have been the rock'n'roll star's 56th birthday.
