Reid's new crackdown is on 'mini-motorbikes'

John Reid, the Home Secretary has launched a crackdown on mini-motorbikes, describing them as a "death trap for children".

The Home Office is funding a £200,000 campaign in 28 "hotspot" areas across Britain during the school summer holidays when complaints about the bikes are expected to soar. The bikes can only be legally ridden by children on private property with permission.

"At worst, these bikes can be a death trap for children and, at best, they're not only illegal but a nuisance to neighbours," said Mr Reid.

The "mini motos" resemble miniature versions of high-speed race bikes but cost as little as £150. They are powered by 49cc engines and can reach 60 mph but are only 18 inches high.

Greater Manchester Police have received 26,000 complaints in the past 14 months. Chief Inspector Haydn Roberts said his officers were now confiscating 20 a week and there had been six deaths related to the mini-motorbikes in the past 12 months.
