The 63-year-old slipped outside his official residence in Edinburgh.
He underwent a brain scan at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary before being transferred to the Western Infirmary in Glasgow, which has a neurological unit.
A spokesman for Mr Dewar said: "His condition is seriously ill."
Mr Dewar, the Labour MP for Glasgow Anniesland, was off recently for three months after undergoing heart surgery.
