Five Scottish Labour MPs yesterday blocked the removal of the Commons mace - symbol of the House's authority - in an 18-minute protest over possible privatisation of the Scottish water industry, as the House adjourned for the summer recess. They relented after an assurance that Tony Newton, Leader of the House, would discuss their grievance.
