An opinion poll published yesterday suggests that Wales may become a Tory-free zone on 1 May.

The survey of 1,000 electors, carried out by Market Research Wales for the Western Mail on 20 and 21 March, says that when undecided voters and no-voters are eliminated support for Labour is 64 per cent, compared with 49.5 per cent at the 1992 election when the party won 27 of Wales's 38 seats. Support for the Tories - who hold six seats - has fallen from 28.6 per cent in 1992 to 19 per cent, with Liberal Democrats down from 12 per cent to 7 per cent and Plaid Cymru static at 9 per cent.
