A senior manager with British Rail's Red Star parcel service was jailed for two and a half years for a pounds 150,000 fraud.

Southwark Crown Court was told that Kevin McAvan, 36, of Crewe, Cheshire, controlled contracts worth pounds 8m a year and committed the fraud by submitting invoices from a fictitious company and authorising payment himself.

McAvan, who admitted four charges of fraud, told police about an alleged pounds 1.6m fraud at Red Star's headquarters in Islington, north London, which could lead to further charges.
