A MAN was seriously injured yesterday when he fell 50ft (15m) from a block of flats, landing head-first in a bin.

Firemen pulled the unconscious man out of the wheelie- bin and revived him. He was taken to Southend General hospital with serious head and neck injuries.

Essex fire service said he was lucky to be alive having fallen from the balcony of his fifth-floor flat in Prittlewell, Southend. 'There is no question the rubbish saved him. If he had landed a few feet to the side he would have fallen on concrete,' a fire service spokesman said.

Police were withholding the 45-year-old man's name until next of kin had been informed of his condition.
