Sheffield council is set to make a further 1,120 employees redundant to balance its books in 1993-94. Voluntary redundancies are being sought before the end of next month in an attempt to bridge a spending gap next year of pounds 37m.

About 1,300 staff have already been shed under a voluntary early retirement scheme.

Nalgo, the local government workers' union, said all members were being balloted. It threatened industrial action if there were any compulsory redundancies.
