An emergency plan was activated when a 79,000-ton tanker went aground in The Solent. The tanker, Avon, was not carrying oil but had 18,000 tons of clean water as ballast, and the threat of pollution was said to be low. It went aground at Browndown, near Gosport, Hampshire, and was stranded 200 yards from the beach.
