The Government rejected claims by the National Union of Teachers that few schools took National Curriculum tests this year. According to preliminary figures issued by the Schools Curriculum and Assessment Authority, 34 per cent of secondary schools did the maths tests for 14-year-olds, 31 per cent for science and 23 per cent for English.
