Thames Water gives sailing club reprieve

THAMES Sailing Club and its unique fleet of 'A' rater sailing boats has been saved after a U-turn by Thames Water.

After seeing an article in The Independent yesterday, the water company agreed within hours to sell the club site to its members. The previous day Thames Water had insisted that it was obliged to sell the plot on the banks of the river at Surbiton by auction and so get the highest price for its shareholders.

Thames had planned 10 houses on the riverside site, squeezing the club into a space that would have made it impossible for them to have continued sailing the 25ft (7.6m) 'A' raters, which have 40ft (12m) masts.
