Steven Tontic was born in 1947 and is a Bosnian Serb. His first book of poems, The Science of the Soul and other Merry Tales, was published in Sarajevo in 1970. He has worked on various literary publications and is the poetry editor at Svetlost publishing house, Sarajevo. This poem is from his latest, as yet unpublished book Sarajevo Manuscript part of which was first published in the Belgrade literary paper, Knjizevne Novine, in January. Steven Tontic has since managed to escape from Sarajevo to Belgrade with his wife and family.
