Glyn Maxwell was born in 1962, the son of an industrial chemist and an actress. In 1987 he won a major scholarship in poetry and playwriting at Boston University, where he studied under Derek Walcott. His first collection Tale of the Mayor's Son (Bloodaxe) was shortlisted for the Mail on Sunday/John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and the Sunday Times Young Writers Award. His second volume Out of the Rain (Bloodaxe) was also shortlisted for the Whitbread and Somerset Maugham Awards. His latest collection Gnyss the Magnificent: Three verse Plays (Chatto) was published in June.
