Ian Hamilton is a freelance writer and critic. His previous collection 55 Poems was published by Faber in 1988. He edited the Oxford Companion to 20th Century Poetry (1994) and published a series of essays Walking Possession: essays and reviews 1968-1993 (Bloomsbury). This poem appears in Agenda An Anthology: The First Four Decades 1959-1993 edited by William Cookson and published by Carcanet at pounds 25. This is the penultimate poem in this week's series on the theme of gardens.
