Mervyn Linford has lived in Essex since early childhood and is a member of the Southend Poetry Group. His poetry has been broadcast on local and national radio and has won several awards including first prize in the John Clare Open competition, 1989. This poem is from Two Essex Poets, a collection of work by Frederic Vanson and Mervyn Linford, published by Brentham Press (40 Oswald Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 3AQ) at pounds 4.95.
