Michael Hartnett was born in 1941 in Co Limerick and now lives in Dublin. His collections include A Necklace of Wrens (1987) and Poems to Younger Women (1988). This poem will appear in Selected New Poems (Gallery Press). It is the third of a series of five poems taken from the new anthology The Penguin Book of Contemporary Irish Poetry edited by Peter Fallon & Derek Mahon, price pounds 7.99.
