Formerly vicar of Aberdaron in North Wales, R S Thomas has received the Heinemann Award of the Royal Society of Literature, the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry and three of the Welsh Arts Council's literature awards. His previous collections include Counterpoint (Bloodaxe, 1990) and Collected Poems (Dent, 1993). This poem is from his collection The Echoes Return Slow (Macmillan, 1988). R S Thomas will be reading and talking about his work at The Hay Festival on Friday at 7pm.
