Ruth Padel researched Greek tragedy, religion and psychology in Oxford, Paris, Berlin and Athens, teaching in London, Crete and on the island of Kalymnos. Her first collection, Summer Snow, was published by Hutchinson in 1990. This poem appears in her second collection, Angel, published by Bloodaxe at pounds 6.95.
