In the Formal Garden

Peter Jones taught Classics and English before co-founding the Carcanet Press with Michael Schmidt. He has written a number of critical works and edited Imagist Poetry (Penguin, 1972). This poem was originally published in The Garden End (Carcanet, 1977) and now appears in The Oxford Book of Garden Verse edited by John Dixon Hunt at pounds 7.99. This is the second of a series of five poems on the theme of gardens.
