Mark Roper was born in 1951 in Derbyshire, and has been living in Ireland for the past 12 years. His first collection The Hen Ark (Peterloo Poets) won the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival Prize in 1991. This poem, written earlier this year, is unpublished.
