Christopher Pilling was born in Birmingham in 1936. He worked as a schoolteacher before retiring to become a full- time writer. His previous collections include In All the Spaces On All the Lines (Phoenix Pamplet), The New Lake Poets (Bloodaxe, 1991). This poem appears in his latest collection Foreign Bodies published by Flambard Press (4 Mitchell Avenue, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 3LA).
