David Constantine was born in 1944 in Salford and lectures in German at Oxford. This poem first appeared in Selected Poems (Bloodaxe, 1991), which includes poems from three previous collections as well as new work and now appears in Poetry With An Edge, a new anthology edited by Neil Astley and published by Bloodaxe at pounds 8.95.
