Dennis O'Driscoll was born in Thurles, Co Tipperary, in 1954. He is a former editor of Poetry Ireland Review; and one of Ireland's most widely published poetry critics. This poem is taken from his most recent collection, Long Story Short (Anvil, pounds 7.95). He will be reading on Sunday in Jubilee Hall, Aldeburgh, Suffolk, at 3.15pm, as part of the Fifth Aldeburgh Poetry Festival, at which 20 national and international contemporary poets will converge (box office: 0728 453543).
