This poem by Carol Ann Duffy, appears in her collection Mean Time which won this year's Whitbread Poetry Award. Duffy was born in Glasgow in 1955 and has lived in Staffordshire, Liverpool and in London, where she now works as a freelance writer. Mean Time is published by Anvil at pounds 6.95.
