Ruth Fainlight has published eight collections of poems, most recently Selected Poems (Hutchinson, 1988), The Knot (Hutchinson, 1990), Doctor Clock's Last Case (Virago) as well as pamphlets and folios from private presses. This poem originally appears in This Time of Year (Sinclair-Stevenson). It is one of 67 poems chosen from more than 140 collections and 120 individual poems to form The Forward Book of Poetry 1995 to be published on 6 October, the same day as the announcement of The Forward Poetry Prizes.
