Adam Johnson was born in Cheshire in 1965. In 1984, he moved to London and published two poetry pamphlets, Poems (Hearing Eye, 1992) and The Spiral Staircase (Acumen, 1993). He assembled his first full-length collection The Playground Bell (Carcanet) shortly before his death from Aids-related diseases in 1993. This poem is from a forthcoming anthology New Poetries (Carcanet, pounds 8.95), due out in May.
