Chris Agee was born in San Francisco in 1956, grew up in Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island, and was educated at Harvard. He now teaches in the Open University in Northern Ireland and lives in Belfast. This poem appears in his last collection, New Hampshire Woods, published by Dedalus at pounds 4.95; its title is the name given by the first Dutch settlers to Block Island, Rhode Island. He will be reading tonight at the Irish Writers' Centre in Dublin (Dublin 872 1302) with Helen Lewis, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill and Michael Longley at a special event in support of the Sarajevo newspaper, Oslobodenje.
