Brendan Kennelly was born in Ballylongford, Co Kerry in 1936. He has published over 28 volumes of poetry and critisism. This poem is published in Breathing Spaces (Bloodaxe, 1994) and is featured in 'The Given Note' exhibition which explores the links between poetry and traditional Irish music. Photographs by Christy McNamara and poems chosen by Michael Donaghy can be seen at the Poetry Library, Royal Festival Hall (inquiries: 071 921 0664) until 11 September.
