Lemn Sissay was born of Ethiopian parents near Wigan in 1967. He is a freelance writer and rapper and sings with the Manchester band Secret Society. He is reading at the Purcell Room, The South Bank Centre, this Saturday as part of Out of the Margins, a celebration of African, South Asian and Caribbean poets in Britain. This poem is taken from Rebel without Applause (Bloodaxe, pounds 5.95).
