This poem was circulated at the time of the death in a Burmese prison of Maung Thawka, poet and democracy activist, in 1991. It appears in the current issue of Index on Censorship, which was published to coincide with the fifth anniversary on 17 July of the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Prize winning leader of Burma's democracy movement.
