Jack Mapanje was born in Malawi and spent four years in prison without trial for writing poetry. He now lives in York. He will be reading at the Royal Festival Hall, London, on 13 November at 1pm as part of Out of the Margins, a celebration of African, South Asian and Caribbean writers in Britain. This poem is taken from The Chattering Wagtails of Mikuyu Prison (Heinemann, pounds 5.99).
