Gerda Mayer was born in Czechoslovakia, and came to England in 1939 at the age of 11. This poem first appeared in Knockabout Show published by Chatto & Windus in 1978. Her more recent collections include Monkey on the Analist's Couch (Ceolfrith Press, 1980) which received a Poetry Book Society Recommendation, and A Heartache of Grass (Peterloo Poets, 1988).
