Kenneth Slessor (1901-1971) was born in central western New South Wales and worked as a journalist. This poem was originally from One Hundred Poems published in Australia by Angus and Robertson in 1944 and now appears in Fivefathers, an anthology of Australian poets edited by Les Murray and published by Carcanet at pounds 9.95.
