Helen Dunmore was born in 1952. She is a poet, novelist and children's writer and lives in Bristol. She has published five collections, one a Poetry Book Society Choice, another the winner of the Alice Hunt Bartlett Award. Her New & Selected Poems, Short Days, Long Nights (1991), was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation. This poem appears in Recovering a Body (Bloodaxe, pounds 6.95). This week, the Daily Poem will feature works on the theme of London.
