Kamala Das was born in 1934 in Kerala into an aristocratic family, who arranged a marriage for her at fifteen. Much of her poetry is focused on the subject of marital unhappiness. Her collections include Summer in Calcutta and The Descendants. This poem appears in The Old Playhouse and Other Poems (Sangam Books, 1973). Kamala Das is taking part in Poetry International on 4 November in the Purcell Room, at The South Bank, at 7.30pm along with fellow poets Eavan Boland, UA Fanthorpe and Liz Lochhead (Box Office: 071 928 8800). All this week, The Daily Poem will feature poets appearing at Poetry International.
