Chris Hurford was born in 1965 and educated at St John's College, Cambridge. His first collection, Heroes, is published by Polygon at pounds 6.95. This poem is taken from The May Anthology, an annual collection of work by Oxford and Cambridge poets. This year the consultant editor is Seamus Heaney; the collection is worth buying for the wisdom of his introduction alone. It is available from Oxford bookshops and Waterstone's in London and Cambridge.
