Mervyn Peake (1911-68) was born in China. He was a gifted artist and illustrator of children's books, and his best known work of fiction was the Titus trilogy. This poem originally appeared in A Book of Nonsense (1972), and now appears in The Puffin Book of Twentieth-Century Children's Verse edited by Brian Patten ( pounds 5.99). Republished by kind permission of the Mervyn Peake Estate 1993. All this week, the Daily Poem features poetry for children.
