Donald Bain was born in 1922 in Liverpool and studied at King's College, Cambridge. He served in the Royal Artillery and Gordon Highlanders and was invalided before the end of the war. He became co-editor of Oxford and Cambridge Writing in 1942. This poem appears in Poems of the Second World War the Oasis selection (Everyman Classics, pounds 5.95), with Editor-in-Chief Victor Selwyn, in association with the Salamander Oasis Trust. All this week, the Daily Poem will feature poetry from the Second World War.
