The miners who died

THE DEAD miners were: David Shelton, 31, colliery undermanager from Bingham; had worked at Bilsthorpe for eight months; married with a young daughter. Bill McCulloch, 26, a heading worker from Rainworth; single, had worked at the pit for 10 years. Peter Alcock, 50, heading worker of Eakrigg; Married with children, had worked at Bilsthorpe for 14 years.

Those rescued were: Paul Smith, 22, of Bilsthorpe; single, had worked at the pit for three years. Russ Turner, 36, heading worker of Mansfield; married with two children had worked at the pit for 15 years. Orest Kocij, 43, electrician of Blidworth; married with three children had worked at the pit for 19 years.
