Ageing cooling towers bite the dust

They dominated the landscape for 50 years, but yesterday the High Marnham cooling towers in Nottinghamshire were demolished in a controlled explosion.

The five towers had been out of action since the coal-fired power station closed in 2003. E.ON said its towers were "in danger of becoming unsafe". The Independent covered the issue last week.
