In an atrocious blizzard, a mountain rescue team spotted the remains of one aircaft alongside parts of the second near the summit of Ben Macdui, Britain's second-highest peak, in the Cairngorms.

The wreckage of the F-15C fighter-bomber was found close to the area where the last radar contact was made with the pilots on Monday afternoon as they took part in a three-hour training flight from their base at USAF Lakenheath, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

The two pilots, Lieutenant- Colonel Kenneth Hyvonen and Captain Kirk Jones, are believed to have died after their planes collided during a practice bombing run. The Royal Air Force said a party from the RAF mountain rescue team based at Leeming, North Yorkshire, made the discovery.
