Modern man does not like behaving badly and laddism, a particularly unfeminine trait of celebrity females in the Nineties, the study suggests. Millennium man, researchers found, believes in marriage, monogamy and wants children. He is prepared to cry in public and prefers quality time with his partner to a rowdy night out with his mates.

The majority of modern fathers place greater importance on family life than on a career and like to spend more time with their children than their fathers did with them. More than half the 1,000 men interviewed by Men's Health magazine for the survey, published to coincide with the start of Men's Health Week, said they also felt more emphasis was placed on women's welfare than on men's.

The survey found that 77 per cent of men believed in monogamy; 76 per cent felt marriage was important; and 43 per cent said they would want to start a family once married.
