A 15-month-old boy has died in hospital after falling into a garden pond, police said today.
The toddler had wandered out of his home in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, and was discovered in the pond at 2.30pm yesterday.
A Sussex Police spokesman said its police helicopter was sent to the scene after the ambulance service took an emergency call and requested back-up.
He said: "A little boy had wandered out of the house and was found to have fallen into a garden pond.
"He was taken by the helicopter to the accident and emergency department of Worthing Hospital, but unfortunately has died."
The spokesman added: "This would appear to be a very tragic accident and we are not treating the death as suspicious."
