Train delays: Commuters face long journey home after chaos caused by Southern Rail and Gatwick Express power outages

Commuters are facing a miserable journey home for the second time this week following a power cut that brought chaos to London train lines.

Thousands of travellers were evacuated after six hours of waiting in sweltering trains that came to a standstill.

An electricity issue between Wandsworth Common and Clapham Junction saw trains in and out of Victoria Station suspended.

Network Rail has said severe disruption is expected to continue into the evening as engineers continue to remove damaged trains from the tracks.

Commuters are being warned to stay away of Victoria Station, with Gatwick Express services among the worst affected, and seek alternative routes from Waterloo and Blackfriars.

Trains between Balham and Victoria are running with up to 90 minute delays, and services at London Bridge and Clapham Junction will also continue to be disrupted.

Earlier 904 passengers were rescued from one train, while other passengers waited for hours - handing out water - while they waited to be rescued.

Passengers on Southern trains were badly affected as were those attempting to travel to Gatwick Express earlier today.

Many took to social media to express their anger.

A Network Rail spokesman said in a statement earlier today: "A major power supply problem between Clapham and Wandsworth Common has disrupted Southern train services into London Victoria this morning.

"Engineers are on site and we aim to resume services as quickly as possible.

"Tickets are valid on all other routes into London and Southern passengers are advised to avoid travelling through Clapham Junction, which is very busy.
