Two passenger jets carrying a total of 86 people were involved in a near miss on Tuesday night near Rochdale in Lancashire.
The incident occurred when Manchester Air Traffic Control cleared a British Midlands DC9 carrying 56 people from Leeds to Heathrow through to 19,000ft which brought it into conflict with a Business Air Saab 340 taking 30 people from East Midlands Airport to Edinburgh.
The Civil Aviation Authority, which is investigating the incident, refused to comment on the closeness of the two planes. Both pilots reported the incident.
