Vandalism was the likely cause of a train crash in which the driver and a passenger died at the weekend, it emerged last night.

The driver, Arthur McKee, 35, of Baillieston, Glasgow, and Alan Nicol, 21, a student, of Greenock, were killed when the train left the rails and hit a bridge near Greenock, Strathclyde, at 11pm on Saturday.

Strathclyde police have launched an investigation. A spokesman for Railtrack said yesterday that 'materials' had been found on the track.
