The tide at Arromanches, Normandy, recedes to reveal sections of the Mulberry harbour used by Allied troops during the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944. Hundreds of pre-fabricated harbour sections were towed across the Channel 50 years ago to enable soldiers to establish an early beachhead for the invasion. A three-part series on the landings begins in the Independent on Thursday.
