Fifteen people were rescued after huge waves crashed over the pier at Roker, Tyne and Wear, injuring two 14-year-old boys.

Anglers dragged the boys to safety, but the waves were too high to carry them back along the pier.

An RAF helicopter airlifted the two injured teenagers and one paramedic to Sunderland General Hospital. A tunnel through the pier was opened up to allow the others to escape.

Fire destroyed the Victorian pavilion at the end of Llandudno pier, in Gwynedd.
